The Best Time to Take Tennis Lessons in South Florida

By CoachField Team ·

South Florida is one of the very few US markets where tennis is genuinely a year-round sport. But "year-round" doesn't mean "every month is equal." Each season has its tradeoffs — weather, court availability, coach availability, snowbirds. Here's the actual seasonal playbook for getting the most out of your tennis lessons.

The seasons, decoded

October through April: peak season

Mid-70s and dry. Perfect tennis weather. This is also when every snowbird in America descends on Florida, club calendars fill up, and the best coaches book out weeks in advance. If you want to work with a top-tier coach, plan ahead — book a recurring weekly slot in September before the season starts.

May through June: shoulder season

Hotter, but court availability eases up dramatically and coaches have more flexibility. Many coaches offer better package pricing during this window. This is the sleeper-best time of year to start lessons.

July through September: hot, wet, but available

The reality: it's hot. Daily afternoon thunderstorms. But mornings (6:30-9:30 a.m.) are often the most beautiful tennis hours of the year. Coaches have full schedules they can give you. Many serious students do their hardest training blocks now because the courts are empty and the prices softer.

Best time of day in South Florida

  • 6:30-9:30 a.m. — cool, dry, courts open, coaches fresh.
  • 5:30-8:30 p.m. — sun lower, temperature dropping, courts busy but bookable.
  • Avoid 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. May-Sept unless you genuinely love the heat.

If you're playing tournaments

USTA Florida tournament season peaks November-March. If you're prepping for tournaments, your private-lesson volume should ramp 8-12 weeks before. So if your first event is in February, you should be increasing volume by November. The reverse: late spring and summer are when you do technique rebuilding without match pressure.

City-by-city notes

  • Miami: humid, expect to sweat. Indoor courts almost don't exist.
  • Boca Raton: slightly cooler than Miami, more club courts with shade structures.
  • Jupiter: sea breezes make morning lessons unusually pleasant year-round.
  • Weston: inland and hotter, but more lit courts for evening sessions.

How far in advance to book

  • October-April: 1-2 weeks ahead for top coaches.
  • May-September: often same-week or even same-day.
